GGC2 Event ‘Advancing the LLA Principles in Slums and Informal Settlements’

In cities around world, urban poor populations are facing extreme marginalization and exclusion in general and specifically as it relates to addressing the ongoing chronic and acute effects of climate change on cities and their resident. Indeed, urban poor communities are those the most severely affected by climate change in cities.  Despite this, urban poor communities are rarely given a seat at the table in climate action planning processes.

To address this, as well as the channeling of resources for climate action planning to this level, the Locally Led Adaptation Principles were drafted and adopted in 2020/21. Despite the large number of organisations and nation states that have endorsed these, the question remains as to what locally-led adaptation really means. How local are we talking about? And how do we prevent LLA from being another buzz word that is not implemented meaningfully on the ground? These are the questions this session will seek to answer, demonstrating how organized communities of the urban poor are uniquely positioned to be critical actors in driving locally-led adaptation efforts in cities across the Global South and showcasing the work they are doing to achieve these goals.

This event is organised by Slum Dwellers International (SDI).
