SUMMARY:CSW66 parallel event ‘The Neighborhood: Climate and Women’s Health’
DESCRIPTION:In March, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66), the UN’s foremost forum for advancement of gender equality, will for the first time prioritize as its key theme the inter-linkages between gender equality, health, and climate change, environment and disaster risk reduction.\nThe National Congress of Neighborhood Women in collaboration with WeAct will be presenting a virtual parallel event on Monday, March 14 from 4:00 – 5:30 EST on The Neighborhood: Climate and Women’s Health. \nThe event focuses on how neighborhood and grassroots community women in marginalized and low-income urban communities are collaborating to ensure their participation in creating sound and fair environmental health and protection policies and practices. Climate change disproportionately affects women’s health. Extreme weather events boost the spread of diseases.\nThe session will be divided into two sections. The first section will focus on Eco Champions: stories of women who have confronted climate change and environmental crises that have affected community health. Speakers for this session will include: Lisa Bloodgood, North Brooklyn Neighbors;  Abeer Bhutmah, Palestinian Environmental NGO Network; and Akeisha Clarke, Grassroots organizer in Grenada working on overfishing and poverty. The second section will focus on Strategies for Impact and Coalition Building. Speakers for this section include: Frances Lucerna, El Puente; Maria Lopez Nunez, Ironbound;  and Sonal Jessel of WeAct.\n
